![]() ![]() Sonically, this is up there with many paid-for analogue emulations and, while it lacks the bells and whistles of something like Arturia’s V Collection synths, OB-Xd does build on the design of the original with a morphable filter design and voice variation controls. ![]() OB-Xd lives up to its inspiration on both fronts. This is an emulation of Tom Oberheim’s classic OB-X polysynth, an analogue classic beloved for its thick, rich sound and easy-to-use interface. It remains our favourite freeware synth, though, based largely on its blend of simple usability and excellent sound. OB-Xd (VST/AU) isn’t the flashiest one on the market, and nor is it the newest. Once you've got your free DAW, you'll likely to want some some free plugin synths to use in it. Throw in AU plugin support and you realise that, If you need a free DAW on the Mac, there’s little reason to look anywhere else.ĭownload Apple GarageBand (opens in new tab) If you do decide that you need more features, Logic Pro provides a ready-made upgrade path on the Mac, as much of the functionality is the same and GarageBand projects can be loaded into it. The effects library includes virtual guitar amps and stompboxes, and there are enough editing and mixing features for you to polish a track to completion. There are plenty of rhythmic and instrumental loops, too - just drag them into the Timeline and start creating - and Apple’s excellent Drummer enables you to create customised drum tracks to fit your projects. Not only can you record audio - your guitar or mic, for example - but you also get a strong selection of software instruments that can be played from a MIDI keyboard. And guess what? It makes it ridiculously easy for pretty much anyone to start making music. ![]() It also serves to gauge the timbre of electronic hi-hats and can reveal tonal imbalances in the treble when the texture of those hi-hats changes. The most famous free DAW of them all comes bundled with every Mac and is freely downloadable for iOS devices. Crone's vocals are already kind of nasal in this song, and an excessive boost to the 1-1.5K region will make him sound irritatingly nasally. ![]() Both of these songs have many layers to them and serve as a decent test of separation. Tristam - With Love Until We Die and Truth. It's "static" bass, hence tests the pure FR in the sub-bass. For example, the Focal Elex fares worse in this test than the Aeon 2 Noire, despite having better punch for drums, because this test basically ignores punch. It's a mountain of bass below 50 Hz and it doesn't have much dynamics in that region during those 15 seconds, so headphones that have good punch and macro-dynamics but less raw bass elevation do not do well in this test. The first 15 seconds of this song are nearly a pure sub-bass quantity test. KDrew and Taryn Manning - Summer Ashes (VIP). Apple Music, iTunes, and Beatport have the longer version (which is not the Extended Mix). I prefer the 4:47 version of this song, but it's hard to find this version as Spotify and Qobuz both only have the 3:35 single version. It also tests the layering and tonality of female vocals. This is an even more strenuous treble test, as it's more like white noise rather than pink noise. The drop (especially the first drop at 1:25) contains a background of pink noise (you can see it in a spectrum analyzer), and it should sound much like pink noise, so I use it to detect annoying peaks in the upper treble, and to check overall treble levels.Īndrew Rayel - My Reflection (feat. This song tests upper treble and higher-pitched male vocals. I've found that certain headphones render the bass notes as "slow" and lacking in impact, while others place the little instruments fluttering around during the drop in odd places. The rendition of Frampton's voice can reveal issues like harshness in the upper midrange and lower treble. This tests female vocals, bass impact, and imaging. Most of my listening is to EDM with vocals, often with acoustic instruments mixed in, so I have a whole bunch of test tracks from that genre.ĭabin & Dia Frampton - Bloom. ![]()
